Spinal misalignments can create a chronic irritation to the nervous system that has an adverse effect on the immune system and the body's capacity to heal itself. Since the nervous system controls every function of the body, these spinal impingements can result in allergic type reactions. When the misalignments and accompanying nerve irritations are removed through chiropractic treatment, the allergic responses will often decrease or disappear. Asthma Many patients have reported receiving relief for asthma through chiropractic care. Adjustments have often been found to help the symptoms of asthma by restoring nerve function to the respiratory system. If the nervous system is being irritated that controls the bronchial musculature, it can result in muscle spasms. In turn, it can cause the symptoms described as asthma. Relieving pressure on the nerves, on many patients, provides reduction or possible resolution of the problem when nerve function is restored to the closed airways that cause the wheeze and gasp for air. Numerous studies have revealed that chiropractic care is superior in improving asthmatic conditions over conventional medical bronchodilators, expectorants and corticosteroids. Carpal Tunnel Carpal tunnel is an irritation to the median nerve as it goes through a tunnel formed by carpal bones in the wrist. If one or more of the bones misalign, the result may be pain, inflammation and nerve pressure in the wrist. This irritation is frequently caused by overuse (repetition) or inappropriate posture involving ergonomics, especially in regard to keyboard use. Chiropractic adjustments to the carpal (wrist) bones are frequently effective in removing the nerve irritation. While surgery is often recommended for carpal tunnel, the results may be disappointing. Spinal misalignments in the neck may accompany Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which can result in numbness and tingling, loss of strength or pain. Chiropractic care has been known to produce good results with carpal tunnel problems, without drugs or surgery. Headaches Whether it is an occasional headache or full blown migraine headaches, chiropractic care is frequently successful in relieving...and eliminating...headaches. Traditionally, medications have been taken to relieve the symptoms of a headache. The problem with the medications is that they simply make the symptoms go away for a limited amount of time. The headache returns. In chiropractic, the goal is to find the cause of the headache through examination and necessary x-rays. If misalignments are found that do cause headaches, it is possible the cause may be removed through chiropractic adjustments. Indigestion Indigestion is often the result of subluxations (misalignments) of the spine, usually involving the mid-thoracic vertebrae (middle of the back bones). While many try to alleviate the burning discomfort of acid indigestion with medicine, the symptoms may return quickly. The individual limits their choices in food to avoid the returning indigestion. Removal of the subluxations (misalignments) of the spine allows proper nerve function to supply the areas of the body involved with digestion. Many people have found chiropractic treatment to be successful in bringing the digestive system back into balance. Low Back Pain Misalignment of the spine can cause serious low back pain. This pain can be restricted to the low back, or result in a radiating pain down the leg known as Sciatica. With chiropractic care, realignment of the bones in the spine often relieves the patient of pain and restores movement to the low back. Conservative chiropractic adjustments should be the first choice in low back care. Sciatica The sciatic nerves originate in the lumbars, or low back vertebrae. They are the largest nerves in the body, each running from the lower spine, behind the hip joint, to the buttocks and back of the leg to the foot. If a sciatic nerve becomes inflamed, it can radiating symptoms into the buttocks, leg, knee and foot. The symptoms can range from burning to numbness and tingling, or excruciating, shooting pain. Sciatica can be the result of a spinal misalignment in the back. Relief from sciatica is frequently obtained through chiropractic treatment as the doctor realigns the bones of the spine. Numbness & Tingling Numbness and tingling problems, whether in the arm & hand or in the leg & foot, are frequently caused by nerve impingements in the spine. Nerves that go to the arm, hand, leg and foot, originate in the spinal column. If the bones of the spine are subluxated (misaligned), they create pressure on the nerves that supply those areas. When the pressure is removed, the numbness and tingling usually subside. If the subluxation (misalignment) is not removed, the numbness and tingling may persist, and it may become worse. It is possible for symptoms to progress to muscle weakness and pain. Shoulder Problems Shoulder problems can result from a number of primary sources. The problem can arise from the rotator cuff muscles, or misalignments of the clavicle (collar bone), humerus (arm), scapula or the cervical vertebrae (neck bones). A complete evaluation of the shoulder through neurological, orthopedic and physical exams, along with necessary x-rays, can determine where the shoulder problem is originating. Appropriate treatment can then be recommended to restore shoulder function. Chiropractic care is a conservative approach to restoring shoulder function. |
